WHY “A Cabinet of Curiosities”?

In the Renaissance and Baroque eras, a “cabinet of curiosities” was a collection - often filling an entire room or gallery - of rare and fascinating objects of nature, science, archaeology, astronomy, and beyond. (As seen in the picture above!) These collections invited visitors to wonder, ask questions, and learn.

For our sixth season, Seven Hills Baroque invites you to do the same. You’ll encounter lesser-known historical instruments, new artistic collaborations, and musical gems from across the Baroque era, with each concert exploring a different corner of the work of early music. Whether you are simply curious, or returning as a longtime supporter, we hope you will leave each performance having discovered something new: an unusual instrument, an unfamiliar composer, or a musical treasure you can’t wait to hear again! 🎶

Chamber Sonatas: Baroque Cornett and Sackbut

Sunday, November 8th, 2026 | 3:00 pm

Indian Hill Church (6000 Drake Avenue)

Featuring works of Fux, Bertali, Cima, Marini, and Castello, this program of chamber sonatas highlights two unique and rather obscure Baroque instruments: the cornett (also called the cornetto or zink), a lip-reed wind instrument made in both straight and curved forms (as seen in the figure above, third from the left) and the sackbut, the direct predecessor of the modern slide trombone (as seen above, all the way to the right.)

We start our season off showcasing two very special instruments, so please join us for this exciting first concert of our season!

Baroque Duets

Sunday, February 14th, 2027 | 3:00 pm

Indian Hill Church (6000 Drake Avenue)

Featuring the Double Mandolin Concerto by Vivaldi, a Double Concerto by Bach, and vocal duets featuring two Baroque specialists, join us in celebration of all forms of love on Valentine’s Day for our “Baroque Duets” program!

Highlighting the Baroque mandolin (the smaller cousin of the lute, with a golden tone), and beautiful vocal and instrumental duet collaborations to celebrate human dedication, connection, and passion, you are sure to fall in love with this program! ❤️

The Old and The New: Chalumeau and Countertenor

Sunday, April 4th, 2027 | 3:00 pm

Indian Hill Church (6000 Drake Avenue)

Featuring the Zelenka “Qui Tollis” from Missa Eucharista, the Graupner Trio Sonata with bass chalumeau and viola d’amore, and other incredible works by Vivaldi, Fasch, and Telemann, join us for another exploration into unique Baroque instruments on our season finale!

Highlighting the chalumeau, the single-reed wood instrument and the predecessor to the modern clarinet, and the countertenor voice, the highest of all male voice types, and a healthier continuation of the history of the alto castrato, you won’t want to miss the rich, velvety tones from both of these fabulous and rare Baroque instruments. ✨
